In 2009 The Last Tuesday Society opened its first permanent home: a shop, art gallery and museum on Mare Street in Hackney. Designed in the style of a 17th century Wunderkabinett, the shop sells a wide variety of curiosities including 19th century shrunken heads, taxidermy, narwhal tusks, carnivorous plants and articulated skeletons.
I cannot recommend the Museum highly enough – it’s in the small basement of the small shop, but that doesn’t mean that there is little to see. Everywhere you turn, and above you, and below you, there are strange wonders, some of which stare back. Back upstairs, behind the shop space, there’s a room which functions as lecture space, a taxidermy classroom, a puppet theatre, a mask-making workshop, and a temporary exhibition space. I could not choose one single item, from museum or shop, to place in my own museum.
Enough words. You must see it. Go. Go now.
